If I install the old hard drive the "Error " goes away. The old hard drive is seen in the Dell Diagnostic routine but it fails the surface scan. Should this make a difference??? All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Replies 9. Did you move the edge connector from the back of the original drive to the pins on the back of the new one?

If you are refering to the connector that slides over the pins on the hard drive, yes. The new hard drive is being seen correctly in the BIOS. It will boot using the Dell Diagnostics CD. But this CD does not see any hard drives. The drive was recgonized. In fact Windows Vista actually finished its first part of installation. And then when the "Please Restart Your Computer" part comes in, I restarted without a problem, but when it was trying to load into Windows, it died.

It still shows the Error on bootup though. It seems like it was installed correctly. I don't know it could be a bad drive. I guess it couldn't hurt to have them replace it. If the replacement acts the same way then you know it is something else. Have you tried the Vista installation more than once? Yeap, I tried multiple times. In fact there was once I zero filled the drive before trying to install.

But it turns out the same way. Well, I guess it was bad luck to have a possibly faulty drive as a new one. Oh yes! I forgot. And the tests indicated the HDD was healthy. Could it be a mainboard or HDD controller issue? Unfortunately, it could be the HDD controller and in laptops that probably means replacing the MB which is too expensive.

The first HD didn't give that exact error it just froze sometimes. The new one is the first time you see this error? Did you install it yourself or have it installed? I installed it myself. I'm getting a error message many times when I try to boot my computer. Do you just want what's on the black chunk half-way between the plug and the computer itself on the power cord?

I get the message many times when I boot the computer, but not every time. So I've taken to just trying and trying until I get booted. Thinking that my HD was failing, I bought new one. So I have a brand new hard drive, and I'm still having the problem.
