This water is picked up and slung onto the condenser by the slinger fan to help discharge heat. This helps to improve cooling efficiency. In humid conditions it may be necessary, or preferred, to remove the plug to allow excess water to drain out. If you use an existing wall sleeve, you should measure its dimensions. Install the new air conditioner according to the included installation instructions to achieve the best performance.
All wall sleeves used to mount the new air conditioner must be in good structural condition and have a rear grille to securely attach the new air conditioner. Watch this video to learn about Portable Air Conditioner Installation. Portable air conditioners are designed to be used in just about any location of your home. The units can be rolled almost anywhere and used as long as there is a window within approximately 5 ft that the exhaust hose can be connected to.
Below are a few other guidelines that will help you get the most out of your new machine. The vent hose will extend approximately 5 ft. You do not have to try to cover or damp the outside exhaust opening. This is important because I leave the units in place year round. We find a few more occasions to use them throughout the year for unseasonal hot days and even to provide a little white noise when ambient noise in the house or in the neighborhood gets a little out of spec.
Use a stud finder to locate two adjacent stud bays that will provide enough room for the opening. This allows for a replacement unit, which might be larger. It also provides plenty of air circulation around the appliance, which can get a bit tucked in depending on the thickness of the wall. Use a Speed Square and a torpedo level to make sure the jamb box is both level and square while marking the out-side perimeter of the box on the wall. Use a multi-tool to cut the drywall just outside of the pencil line.
I wanted a tight fit to avoid using trim on the inside, but you can plan to use trim if you want. Note the shop vac hose in my left hand to grab most of the drywall dust. With the insulation removed, mark the opening corners by drilling through the exterior sheeting with a long drill bit.
Use a torpedo level and framing square to lay out the opening on the exterior as indicated by the four corner holes drilled from the inside. The jamb box can serve as a guide to make sure the layout lines give plenty of room. I did plan to use trim on the exterior. Before cutting the siding, drill holes large enough for a reciprocating saw blade next to the stud and cut it from the interior.
Make sure the jamb box is flush with the exterior sheeting then nail it into place. Paying attention to this step makes it easy to fit exterior casing. Studs are pieces of wood usually 2 x 4 used to support your wall. They usually sit about 16 inches apart. When you locate a stud, mark it with a pencil and find the remaining ones.
Position the guide in such a way that it passes through as few studs as possible. This will make your job a whole lot easier. Shut it off to avoid getting electrocuted when you start cutting into your wall. Using the guide, sleeve, or bracket that came with your through the wall air conditioner, trace an outline that runs through as few wall studs as possible.
Score along the outline with your drywall knife and then either hammer the piece out or make a clean cut with your saw. By the end of this step, you should see exposed wall studs. Cut those studs as needed so that their edges are flush with those of your outline. The exterior portion of the wall should still be present at this stage. Cut your 2 x 4s so that they fit lengthwise into your wall opening. Nail those pieces together and fit the resulting rectangle into your hole.
Fix it to your studs as much as possible using screws. You should be able to see clean through to the inside of your home at this point. Your wall AC unit installation manual should include some instructions for fixing the bracket in place, either with screws or some other method.
Once the sleeve is in place, insert the air conditioner itself. Before you call it a day, however, you need to properly seal off all gaps in the opening.
